Arizona State and Arizona play for the Territorial Cup in football, and things are just as heated when the two meet on the hardwood. The rivalry between the two schools began on the court long before they two met in football and dates back to 1913. The Wildcats have gotten the better of the Sun Devils throughout most of the series holding a 149-83 lead in the all-time series, but you’ll still be in for a treat when attending an Arizona State-Arizona game.
Arizona State Sun Devils Stadium Guide
In Game
Arizona State is one of the biggest party schools in the country, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that their student section can get quite wild. The 942 Crew, as they’re known, create a lot of the energy inside Desert Financial Arena and play a prominent role in the fun atmosphere at a Sun Devils basketball game. Their energy is especially high when rivals Arizona come to town, and no matter who the Sun Devils are playing you won’t want to miss the curtain of distraction, which takes place when opponents shoot free throws.
In addition to the wild fans, Desert Financial Arena is also painted head to toe in maroon and gold. All around the arena you’ll see the school’s colors as well as tributes to the Sun Devils. The arena is home to the ASU Athletics Hall of Fame, which features exhibits dedicated to athletes, coaches, and teams from the Sun Devils past. You’ll also see a mural featuring former ASU student athletes when you walk in, and there are plenty of banners honoring the best Sun Devils basketball players from the past including the Houston Rockets James Harden.
After the game stop by Mill Avenue to grab a bite to eat or something to drink. There are a wide variety of different bars and eateries here, so no matter what you’re in the mood for you’ll find it. If you’re looking to experience an Arizona State staple, then stop by Devil’s Advocate on University.
An Arizona State basketball game is a fun game day experience that includes a fun in-game atmosphere, lots of Sun Devils history, and of course plenty of partying if you’re so inclined.
Make sure to check out the ASU Athletics Hall of Fame if you want to learn more about Sun Devils athletics. Here you’ll find tributes to all of the best athletes in ASU history. There is also a trophy case in the south lobby of Desert Financial Arena, so stop by both when attending a Sun Devils basketball game.
Right as you walk into Desert Financial Arena, you’ll be greeted with the sight of a mural that wraps around the entire facility. The mural contains pictures of former student-athletes and is a can’t miss for anyone attending an ASU basketball game.
Hanging from the rafters of Desert Financial Arena are banners honoring the best of the best when it comes to ASU basketball teams and players. The banners honor the program’s three Elite Eight appearances as well as all-time greats such as Lionel Hollins and James Harden. Take a minute to remember all your favorite Sun Devils basketball memories during your trip to Tempe.
Sparky
Sparky, the Sun Devil, is the official Arizona State University mascot, which can be seen all around the stadium on game days. Sparky was designed by Disney illustrator Bert Anthony in 1951 and has been representing ASU ever since. Look for Sparky to entertain the crowd with his trident and wild antics next time you take in a game at Sun Devil Stadium.
The ASU student section, known as The 942 Crew, is the wildest group of fans at any Sun Devils basketball game. No matter what the score these gold clad super fans will be chanting and cheering loudly for their team. If you want to get loud, then make sure to sit in or near The 942 Crew.
The Sun Devils student section is famous for its signature free throw distraction technique. The student section distracts opposing free throw shooters by setting up a black curtain and then unveiling the fans behind it right as the player shoots. Don’t miss the curtain distraction when attending a Sun Devils basketball game.

National Anthem
During the national anthem Arizona State fans yell, “home of the Sun Devils” rather than “home of the brave.” Join in on this fun tradition to show off your ASU school pride.
Oh, say! can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming;
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there:
Oh, say! does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In fully glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh, long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion
A home and a country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution!
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
Oh, thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n-rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust”:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the Sun Devils!
