Rivalries & Top Games to Attend

Red Wings vs Maple Leafs

Rival Team: Toronto Maple Leafs

The Red Wings and Maple Leafs are once again in the same division thanks to realignment making a Wings-Leafs game a can’t miss proposition. These two Original Six teams have met in the playoffs more times than anyone else except for the Bruins and Canadiens, so there is always bad blood when they get together. Most recently, the rivalry between these two was heightened once again when former Red Wings coach Mike Babcock signed with the Leafs. No matter where these two teams are in the standings a Red Wings-Maple Leafs games is always must see entertainment.

Red Wings vs Blackhawks

Rival Team: Chicago Blackhawks

The Red Wings and Blackhawks may no longer play in the same division or even the same conference, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a can’t miss game when Chicago comes to town. The two teams have been competing on the ice since 1926, and at one point the two teams even shared the same owner. The two teams have met in the Stanley Cup Playoffs 15 times with the Hawks winning the most recent matchup four games to three after overcoming a three games to one deficit. There is still a lot of hate in the building when these two get together, so don’t miss your chance to see the Wings take on the Hawks.

Red Wings vs Penguins

Rival Team: Pittsburgh Penguins

The Red Wings-Penguins rivalry is one of the newer rivalries in the NHL and is a result of the two teams meeting both the 2008 and 2009 Stanley Cup Finals. With the Wings move to the Eastern Conference in 2013, you’ll see plenty of good matchups between these two budding rivals.

Things to check out

Championship and Retired Number Banners

The Red Wings are one of the most storied teams in NHL history, and as a result, you’ll be able to see numerous banners hanging from the rafters of Little Caesars Arena. These banners celebrate the Wings 11 Stanley Cup wins as well as all-time greats such as Steve Yzerman and Gordie Howe, so make sure to check them out.

Legend of the Octopus

At Red Wings playoff games fans throw octopuses onto the ice to bring the team good luck. The octopus was chosen due to it having eight legs symbolizing the eight wins the Red Wings needed to take home the cup. The tradition dates back to 1952, so join in on it when attending a Red Wings playoff game.

Al the Octopus

When the Wings skate onto the ice during the playoffs an octopus prop is raised to the rafters. The Red Wings do an incredible job of embracing the Legend the Octopus, so don’t miss Al as the Wings take the ice.
