Rivalries & Top Games to Attend

Show-Me Series

Rival Team: St. Louis Cardinals

The rivalry between the Kansas City Royals and the St. Louis Cardinals is nicknamed the Show-Me Series due to both teams residing in the state of Missouri. The two teams have been playing annually since Interleague Play was introduced in 1997. However, the biggest matchup between the two took place when the two played in the 1985 World Series, which went to seven games. There are always lots of fans of both teams at these games, so don’t miss it when the Cardinals come to town.

Royals vs Twins

Rival Team: Minnesota Twins

Kansas City is only a bit over six hours away from the Twin Cities, so many Twins fans will make the trip to Kauffman Stadium. Additionally, there isn’t a ton of animosity between the two fan bases, so you’ll get enjoy a friendly albeit competitive atmosphere when attending a Royals-Twins game.

Royals vs White Sox

Rival Team: Chicago White Sox

While the Royals and White Sox haven’t been good at the same time recently, there is still plenty of bad blood between these two AL Central rivals. The two teams have gotten in several physical altercations over the years with the most recent taking the form of a benches-clearing brawl in 2015. Royals-White Sox games are always intense regardless of the standings, so keep an eye on the schedule for when the Sox and Royals meet.

Royals Tailgate Guide

Atmosphere

Kauffman Stadium may not be located in the heart of downtown like many other ballparks around the Major Leagues, but that doesn’t mean you won’t find a thriving tailgating scene here in Kansas City. There is plenty of space to tailgate outside Kauffman, which along with Arrowhead Stadium makes up the Truman Sports Complex. All you’ll see is miles and miles of tailgating space when you arrive at The K meaning you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to set up your tailgate.

In addition to there being lots of space to tailgate, you’ll also find some of the best barbecue anywhere when tailgating before a Royals game. Barbecue is a huge part of the city’s culture, so make sure to try some during your trip to Kansas City.

Finally, Royals fans are quite friendly regardless of what team you support and love to show off their tailgates. Don’t be shy and you’ll make friends quickly at a Royals tailgate.

Fight Songs

  1. Friends in Low Places

This Garth Brooks hit has been played in the sixth inning at Kauffman Stadium since 2008

Blame it all on my roots
    I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
    The last one to know
    The last one to show
    I was the last one
    You thought you’d see there
    And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
    And I toasted you
Said, honey, we may be through
But you’ll never hear me complain

‘Cause I’ve got friends in low places
    Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
    And I’ll be okay
I’m not big on social graces
Think I’ll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I’ve got friends in low places

Well, I guess I was wrong
    I just don’t belong
But then, I’ve been there before
    Everything’s all right
    I’ll just say goodnight
And I’ll show myself to the door
    Hey, I didn’t mean
    To cause a big scene
Just give me an hour and then
    Well, I’ll be as high
    As that ivory tower
    That you’re livin’ in

‘Cause I’ve got friends in low places
    Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
    And I’ll be okay
I’m not big on social graces
Think I’ll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I’ve got friends in low places

    [3rd Verse:]
    I guess I was wrong
    I just don’t belong
But then, I’ve been there before
    And everything is alright
    I’ll just say goodnight
And I’ll show myself to the door
I didn’t mean to cause a big scene
Just wait ’til I finish this glass
    Then sweet little lady
I’ll head back to the bar
And you can kiss my ass

  2. Kansas City Hey Hey Hey

Written by The Beatles, this song is played after Royals victories

    Ah, Kansas City
Gonna get my baby back home
    Yeah, yeah
    I’m gonna Kansas city
Gonna get my baby back home
    Yeah, yeah
Well, it’s a long, long, time
Since my baby’s been goneAh, Kansas City
