Rivalries & Top Games to Attend

Yankees vs Red Sox

Rival Team: Boston Red Sox

Arguably, the most famous rivalry in all of sports, the rivalry between the Yankees and Red Sox dates back to 1919, when Red Sox owner Harry Freeze sold superstar Babe Ruth to the Yankees. The trade sparked the rivalry as Ruth went on to lead the Yankees to four World Series. From 1919 to 2003 the Yankees won 26 World Series to the Red Sox none, however, in 2004 the Red Sox captured their first World Series in 86 years after erasing a three game to none deficit in the ALCS. Yankees-Red Sox games are some of the best games of the season, so make sure to get tickets when the Red Sox come to town.

Subway Series

Rival Team: New York Mets

The intracity rivalry between the Yankees and Mets always makes for a fun game to watch. There are always a lot of bragging rights on the line when the Yankees and Mets meet, and you’ll hear plenty of trash talking making a Yankees-Mets game at Yankee Stadium a can’t miss experience.

Yankees vs Orioles

Rival Team: Baltimore Orioles

The rivalry between the Yankees and Orioles goes way. The two teams have played in numerous big games including the infamous Jeffrey Maier game The atmosphere will be palpable when attending an Orioles-Yankees game late in the season, so don’t miss it when the O’s come to town.

Yankees Tailgate Guide

Atmosphere

The new Yankee Stadium is nothing less than beautiful, with its white marble and limestone facility, which still contains some iconic pieces from the old stadium to celebrate the history of the famous New York Yankees. Fans wander around the surrounding neighborhoods, nicknamed the Concourse, before the games making the city come alive with Yankee spirit. Tailgating is also allowed in the nearby garages and parking lots along River Avenue, so many fans make their way over before games for pre-game activities.

As one of the most well-known baseball franchises in the league, the Yankees always draw a big crowd. They’re also able to charge ridiculous amounts for food inside the stadium, so it is definitely in your best interest to eat before the game as many fans do. However, expensive food doesn’t detract from the palpable excitement felt all around and inside Yankee Stadium.

Traditions

Babe Ruth Plaza

Located right outside the Great Hall between Gate 4 and Gate 6, the Babe Ruth Plaza celebrates the greatest player in baseball history. If you’re a big baseball fan then you must take some time and see the plaza dedicated to the Babe.

Yankee Stadium Facade

The original Yankee Stadium was home to one of the most intimidating facades in professional sports and the new stadium is no different. Yankees stadium’s exterior gives off the feeling you're seeing a game somewhere special, so enjoy the aura and atmosphere that surrounds Yankee Stadium.

Where to tailgate

Yankees Stadium Guide

In Game

In true Yankees fashion, Yankee Stadium is the most expensive ballpark ever built and designed. The stadium commemorates the original stadium from 1923 as well as the post-renovation 1970’s renovation version meaning you’ll find plenty of homages to the Yankees past here. The seating is even laid out in the original grandstand seating design.

In addition to the stadium paying tribute to the original Yankee Stadium, you’ll also find lots of tributes to past Yankees greats. The Great Hall is filled with banners celebrating past players, and there is a Yankee Museum chalked full of memorabilia from the team’s past. Finally, make sure to check out the famous Monument Park behind center field where you’ll find tributes to a bunch of Yankees greats.

The new Yankee Stadium does an excellent job of preserving the franchise’s rich history making a trip to Yankee Stadium a great time for any Yankees fan or baseball lover.

Things to check out

Great Hall

Just inside the main gate is the Great Hall, a hallway lined with images of Yankees legends such as Babe Ruth and Joe DiMaggio. Take some time before the game to explore the Great Hall and see all that Yankee Stadium has to offer.

Yankee Museum

If you continue through the Great Hall, you’ll eventually reach the Yankee Museum, which cycles through exhibits, so there’s always something new to see. It also features the “Ball Wall,” which contains 870 baseballs signed by Yankee coaches, players, managers, and executives with the hopes of eventually containing the signature of every player to ever wear a Yankees uniform.

Frieze

When visiting Yankee Stadium make sure to check out the famous Yankee Stadium frieze. The frieze is one of the most well known features of any ballpark, so enjoy the opportunity to see it in person when attending a Yankees game.

No Names on Back of Jerseys

You’ll notice that there are no names on the back of Yankees player jerseys. Interestingly enough, they were one of the first teams to add numbers to their jerseys in 1929 but have held out on the names for years.

Roll Call

The Bleacher Creatures (see below) take it upon themselves to “roll call” all the Yankees players, until each and every one of them has acknowledged the section. Some players salute, while others just point to the section. The tradition takes place during first inning of every home games and is one of the best things about taking in a game at Yankee Stadium.

Bleacher Creatures

One of the most important traditions in Yankee Stadium is the Bleacher Creatures. Arguably one of the most die-hard and loyal fan bases in all of baseball, the Bleacher Creatures make their presence known at every game in Section 203. The founding of this section is attributed to Ali Ramirez, who used to ring a cowbell to get the crowd going. He has unfortunately since passed away, but the tradition of the cowbell lives on through Creature Milton Ousland. Don’t be surprised to hear them yelling “Asshole!” to fans of the opposing team and other obscenities; this section is not for the faint of heart.

Fight Songs

  1. New York, New York

By Frank Sinatra, played after wins (the Liza Minnelli version after losses) in Yankee Stadium

    Start spreading the news
    I am leaving today
I want to be a part of it
    New York, New York

    These vagabond shoes
    Are longing to stray
Right through the very heart of it
    New York, New York

I want to wake up in a city
    That doesn’t sleep
And find I’m king of the hill
    Top of the heap

    These little town blues
    Are melting away
I’ll make a brand new start of it
    In old New York

If I can make it there
    I’ll make it anywhere
    It’s up to you
    New York, New York

    New York, New York
I want to wake up in a city
    That never sleeps
And find I’m a number one
    Top of the list
    King of the hill
    A number one

    These little town blues
    All melting away
I am gonna make a brand new start of it
    In old New York

And if I can make it there
    I’m gonna make it anywhere
    It’s up to you
New York, New York, New York

There’s no need to be unhappy.

Young man, there’s a place you can go.
I said, young man, when you’re short on your dough.
You can stay there, and I’m sure you will find
Many ways to have a good time.

That’s when someone came up to me,
And said, young man, take a walk up the street.

  3. Workaholic

The first few seconds of this 1992 hit by 2 Unlimited is played after every run scored during the game

[1st person:] Ok, let’s go to work!
[2nd person:] Who the fuck are you?!
    [3rd person:] The workaholic!

    [3rd person:] The workaholic!

[Ray:] The workaholic he works every day
24 hours, no time to play
He won’t quit; he’s addicted to work
I think he’s going out like a jerk
Working, working, what can you do?
See the light from a different point of view
Ready in the morning for the bell to chime
    I think he’s glad it’s working time!

    [3rd person:] The workaholic!

    [Chorus:]
[Anita:] Work your body, baby work your soul
Keep on workin’ workin’ to the bone
Work your body, baby, work your soul
I’m a workaholic when I’m on the floor!

    [3rd person:] The workaholic!

[Ray:] First like a jerk, why you always work?
Messing up your mind with that paperwork?
The only think you need is to break ball is work, and yo, and that’s all
They do it for money, but he for fun
He won’t get away until the job is done
    Drinkin’ drinkin’ like an alchoholic
The guy is just a workaholic!

    [3rd person:] The workaholic!
[3rd person:] The workaholic![3rd person:] The workaholic!
