The Petersen Events Center is the home of the Pittsburgh Panthers men’s and women’s basketball teams. The 12,508 seat arena is located on the University of Pittsburgh campus and opened in 2003. It’s named after John Petersen and his wife Gertrude who donated $10 million towards the building of the facility.
The Petersen Events Center is the only college basketball arena with courtside luxury suites and is home to 18 suites and one 193-seat Super Suite. Additionally, Recreation Management magazine awarded the facility the 2003 Innovative Architecture & Design Honor Award.
Over the years, the Petersen Events Center has been the site of several other events besides Pitt basketball. The arena hosted the 2007 and 2010 NCAA Women’s Division I Championship first and second round games. It also was the site of Jeopardy! College Championship in 2004 and the 2005 Senior Olympics. The arena also hosted a campaign rally for Barack Obama in 2008.
