Rivalries & Top Games to Attend
Spurs vs Mavericks
Rival Team: Dallas Mavericks
The Spurs-Mavericks rivalry dates back to 1980 when the Mavericks joined the league. The rivalry has grown more heated since the 2000s when the Spurs and Mavs would regularly meet in the playoffs. The first playoff series between these two Texas-based teams took place in 2001 when the Spurs beat the Mavs four games to one. Perhaps the biggest series between the Spurs and Mavs occurred in 2006 when the Mavericks defeated the Spurs four games to three to advance to the Western Conference Finals. If you want to attend some of the best games of the season, then be sure to be in attendance when the Spurs take on the Mavs.
Spurs vs Rockets
Rival Team: Houston Rockets
The Spurs-Rockets rivalry is one of the fiercest in the Southwest Division and dates back to the NBA-ABA merger in 1976. These two Texas-based rivals have met in the playoffs three times with the Rocket getting the better of the Spurs all three times. There’s always a lot on the line when the Spurs and Rockets meet up, so don’t miss it.
Spurs vs Suns
Rival Team: Phoenix Suns
The Spurs and Suns have met in the playoffs ten times since 1992, which has led to the development of a deep-rooted hatred between these two Western Conference teams. In the early 90s, the Suns got the best of The Admiral and the Spurs. However, a decade later the Spurs would get their revenge as they stopped the Steve Nash-led Suns dead in their track a few times in the mid to late 2000s. If you want to see the AT&T Center come to life, then make sure to attend a Spurs-Suns game.
Spurs vs Lakers
Rival Team: Los Angeles Lakers
Over the years the Spurs and Lakers have developed a strong rivalry due to their many playoff matchups. These two teams first met in the 1982 Western Conference Finals. However, things didn’t heat up between them until 1999. Since then, the Spurs and Lakers have faced off against each other in the playoffs seven times creating one hell of a rivalry.
