Rivalries & Top Games to Attend

The Battle For The Rag

Rival Team: LSU Tigers

When instate rivals Tulane and LSU get together the winner is awarded a satin flag known as the Tiger Rag. The Tiger Rag was introduced in 1940 to calm tensions from a riot that had occurred following Tulane’s victory in 1938. LSU has a significant lead in the all-time series 69-22-7 making it all that much sweeter when the Green Wave knock off the Tigers.

Tulane vs Ole Miss

Rival Team: Ole Miss Rebels

The Rebels are the Green Waves second oldest rivals behind LSU. There is a lot of history between these two schools with Tulane being Ole Miss’s most played opponent outside of the SEC. Ole Miss holds a 42-29 all-time series lead. However, the Green Wave hold the record for most consecutive wins in the series having won 12 straight from 1919 to 1939.

Tulane vs Georgia Tech

Rival Team: Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

The Yellow Jackets and Green Wave’s rivalry dates all the way back to 1916 when Georgia Tech shutout Tulane 45-0. Georgia Tech also has the distinction of being Tulane’s first opponent in Yulman Stadium in 2014. It’s always a fierce battle when Tulane and Georgia Tech meet, so don’t miss it!

Green Wave Tailgate Guide

Atmosphere

Football has returned to campus at Tulane with the opening of Yulman Stadium in 2014, which means that tailgating has also returned to Tulane’s campus. Tailgating is back at Tulane and is bigger than ever as Tailgate Village provides an excellent pregame experience that can rival anywhere in the American Athletic Conference.

Tailgate Village offers an atmosphere similar to Ole Miss’s The Grove, but on a slightly smaller scale. Here you’ll find dozens of tents filled with Tulane fans grilling and partying before heading into Yulman Stadium to watch the Green Wave dismantle their opponents.

There has been a lot of buzz around Tulane football these past few seasons with the opening of Yulman Stadium bringing football back to campus and that buzz has translated to the tailgating scene here as well. You’ll see people getting to campus as early as five hours before the game to start their pregame festivities you’ll also notice a lot more people tailgating than before when the Green Wave were playing in the Superdome. Come out to Tulane to join in on this budding tailgating tradition that has the potential to become one of the best tailgate spots in all of college football.

Traditions

Victory Bell

The Victory Bell is located in front of McAllister Auditorium and is rung after a victory for the Green Wave. This tradition has been going on for decades and is a great way for the university to show its school pride.

Tailgate Village

This area is the official tailgating area on Tulane’s campus, so head here if you’re looking to set up a tailgate for your friends and family. The spots are first come first serve, so make sure to get here early if you want a good place. You’ll also find a wide variety of pregame activities to take part in here as well including live entertainment and a family fun zone.

Green Wave Stadium Guide

In Game

There has been a large uptick in Tulane’s fan support as the team has moved back to campus with the recent opening of beautiful Yulman Stadium. The new stadium has invigorated the gameday crowds and will look to bring back Tulane’s strong football tradition from the past.

Yulman Stadium offers all the amenities you could want in a college football stadium as you’ll find that every seat in the house offers a great view of the field. However, if you’re looking to get the full luxury experience, then The Glazer Family Club is a must. Here you’ll find a full sports bar and buffet as well as comfortable seats at the 50-yard line.

The fans at Yulman Stadium also make a visit to Tulane an extraordinary experience. You’ll find a renewed sense of school spirit among the students and alumni as the return to campus has brought a lot of fans back to Tulane after years playing away from home in the Superdome. The stadium is filled with green and blue on game days as Tulane fans try their hardest to give the Green Wave any edge they can.

Things to check out

Glazer Family Club

The Glazer Family Club features 1,500 chair back seats with two club rooms overlooking the 50-yard line, a sports bar and an enhanced menu of food on the buffet. This club offers an excellent way to catch a game if you would like to try something different than the traditional seat.

Original Tulane Stadium Medallion

Make sure to stop by and check out the original Tulane Stadium Medallion while attending a game at Yulman Stadium. The medallion was part of the original Tulane Stadium, which hosted not only the Green Wave but also served as home to the New Orleans Saints as well as the Sugar Bowl and three Super Bowls.

Tulane University Marching Band

The Tulane University Marching Band puts on an incredible performance throughout the game, which is showcased by their pregame and halftime shows. The pregame show is more traditional and follows a set pattern where the band plays fan favorites including “Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” and “Roll On, Tulane.” Both the pregame and halftime shows are amazing so make sure to take in both to get the full Tulane gameday experience.

  2. The Olive and the Blue

Here’s a song for the Olive and the Blue Here’s a cheer for the team that’s tried and true,
Here’s a pledge of loyalty to thee,
Oh, Tulane Varsity, Here’s to the Greenbacks that never will say die
And here’s to the hearts that are true, To the men of Tulane, who are fighting for her name
For the Olive and the Blue.
    (Chorus)
Roll, Green Wave, roll them down the field! Hold, Green Wave, that line must never yield!
When those Greenbacks go charging thru the line, They’re bound for Victory,
Hail Green Wave, for you we give a cheer. Hail Green Wave, for you we have no fear, So ev’ry man on ev’ry play,
And then we’ll win the game today,
    Hurrah for Old Tulane.

  3. Alma Mater

We praise thee for thy past, O Alma Mater!

Pledge we now our fealty true
Where the trees are ever greenest,
Where the skies are purest blue.

Take from us our hearts’ devotion,
Thine we are and thine shall be!
