The rivalry between the Valparaiso Beacons and the Butler Bulldogs began on October 1, 1927, with a 58-0 win for the Bulldogs. Butler has won double the amount of games in the series against the Beacons. The Hoosier Helmet Trophy was created to intensify and cement the rivalry in 2006.
