History

Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg, Virginia is the home of the Virginia Tech Hokies men’s and women’s basketball teams. The 10,052 seat arena opened in 1962 and cost $2.7 million to build.

Since opening to replace War Memorial Gymnasium, Cassell Coliseum has undergone several renovations. The arena’s seating capacity was expanded to 10,052 from 9,971. Most recently, Cassell Coliseum received upgrades to the sound system, lighting, and the court.

Over the years, Cassell Coliseum has hosted many famous Hokies basketball games. On January 10, 1983, the Hokies upset #1 ranked Memphis State marking the first time Virginia Tech ever beat a #1 ranked team. The Hokies have beaten a #1 ranked team at Cassell Coliseum twice since, beating North Carolina in 2007 and Duke in 2011. Additionally, the arena set its record attendance on December 3, 1966, when 11,500 came out to see the Hokies take on Purdue.
