History

Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is the home of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons men’s and women’s basketball teams. The 14,665 seat arena opened in 1989 and is named after Vietnam War medic Lawrence Joel.

Before the start of the 2009 basketball season, Joel Coliseum underwent a major renovation. The renovation upgraded the telescoping seating creating better sight lines, replaced the home team tunnel, and replaced the student seats with risers.

Over the years, Joel Coliseum has been the site of many notable events. The arena has hosted NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament games on several occasions including Dean Smith’s 877th career win on March 15, 1997, which made him the winningest coach in college basketball history. Joel Coliseum also hosts a lot of high school basketball games including the annual Frank Spencer Holiday Classic. In addition to basketball, the arena has hosted the 2007 Davis Cup quarterfinals and many concerts.
