Every year the Mountaineers and Thundering Herd square off in the state capital. West Virginia and Marshall first met in 1929. However, the matchup didn’t become a regular fixture until 1978. The Mountaineers hold a 33-11 lead in the all-time series, but you’ll always be in for a good matchup when these two meet.
Backyard Brawl
Rival Team: Pittsburgh Panthers

West Virginia vs Maryland
Rival Team: Maryland Terrapins
The rivalry between West Virginia and Maryland began in 1926 and is one of the few rivalries that for the most part has been a non-conference rivalry. The two teams only played in the same conference from 1950 to 1953, but that hasn’t stopped them from developing a fierce rivalry over the years.

In Game
Former Mountaineer Bob Huggins has had the Mountaineers on an upward trajectory since he took over in 2007 and you’ll be in for a treat when attending a West Virginia basketball game.
The current state of the program, as well as the strong fan support help, create a festive game day atmosphere that will have you on the edge of your seat from the moment the carpet is rolled out until the final whistle. West Virginia doesn’t have any pro teams, so the Mountaineers are the biggest game in town. Fans come from all over the state to support the team, and it shows in how die-hard the fans are here.
The Coliseum is also home to several excellent tributes to one of the best players in basketball history, Jerry West. Before the game, you’ll want to take some time to stop by the life-sized bronze statue outside the arena. You’ll also want to take a trip around the concourse and see the display dedicated to him as well.
Finally, Morgantown is a beautiful place to spend some time, so make the most of your trip. Make sure to stop by Patterson Drive if you’re looking for a quick bite to eat nearby the arena.
A West Virginia Mountaineers game is home to a fantastic atmosphere and is a great place to see some Jerry West memorabilia, so plan your trip today.
Outside the Coliseum’s blue entrance is a life-sized bronze statue of The Logo. Jerry West is the most famous alumni in West Virginia history, so take a minute to snap a picture with the statue of Jerry during your visit to Morgantown.
If the statue isn’t enough Jerry West for you, then make sure to check out the display case dedicated to the Mountaineers legend. The case features a variety of trophies and memorabilia and is a must see for any basketball fan.
Hanging above the arena are banners honoring the best teams and players in Mountaineers history. Observe the Banners to remember the Mountaineers two Final Four appearances as well as legends such as Jerry West and Hot Rod Hundley.
No couch is ever safe in Morgantown even during basketball season. One of the most famous traditions at West Virginia is fans burning couches after the Mountaineers win a big game. The tradition has come under some pressure recently as authorities have been cracking down on couch burning, but fans still take part in this one of a kind tradition.
Before the Mountaineers take the court, a blue and gold carpet is rolled out. The tradition dates back to 1955 and works the crowd into a frenzy as they wait for their Mountaineers to take the court.
Many fans show their Mountaineer pride by wearing coonskin hats to the games. Put on your coonskin hat and join in on the fun that is a Mountaineers game.
The Mountaineer is one of the most active mascots on game days leading the student section in cheers throughout the game. Few mascots in college sports get the student section as pumped up as The Mountaineer, so don’t miss him when attending a West Virginia basketball game.
The Pride of West Virginia puts on an incredible show at football games, and the pep band is no different. The band provides a lot of energy inside the Coliseum, so enjoy the show during your trip to Morgantown.
Fight, fight, fight, fight, Mountaineers!
We’re here to cheer for you.
Take that old ball down the field.
We’re putting our faith in you.
Play that team right off its feet.
You can’t be beat we know.
And when the game is through,
we’ll all cheer for you.
West Virginia, West Virginia, rah!

“Take Me Home Country Roads”by John Denver
Almost heaven, West Virginia
Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River
Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, growin’ like a breeze.
(Chorus)
Country roads, take me home to the place I belong
West Virginia, mountain mama, take me home, country roads.
All my memories gather round her
Miner’s lady, stranger to blue water
Dark and dusty, painted on the sky
Misty taste of moonshine, teardrop in my eye.
(Chorus)
I hear her voice in the morning hour she calls me
The radio reminds me of my home far away
And driving down the road I get the feeling
That I should have been home yesterday, yesterday.
